Title: Bittersweet Dreams
Fandom: Flying Witch
Character/Pairing: Inukai, Akane
Rating/Warning(s): AA
Summary: The pair try for sweet dreams, but something goes awry.
Notes: prompt was 'bitterweet dreams'

"It says we eat them an hour before we fall asleep," Inukai said as she passed the book back to Akane. The spell seemed safe enough, and though it was apparently meant for children who had nightmares, the idea of a good night's sleep with sweet dreams was appealing. Besides, if the spell worked, they'd be good to have around for her family. Best to test them out...
"So we just need to try to sleep in an hour?" Akane questioned as she popped one if the little crackers into her mouth.
Inukai shrugged. "I guess so."
There was something a little odd about the crackers and their taste, but they'd followed the spell. Perhaps the flavor could be adjusted without harming the magical potency once she had a better idea of how they worked... Though that was more Akane's specialty and that... was a little scary.
"Try to keep an eye on the time," Akane said with an echoing shrug. Kenny had already curled up to nap and Al thought he was hiding in the back ofa drawer, asleep, but Inukai was pretty sure they all knew where he was.
A half-hour had passed by the time they got everything cleaned up, and both were definitely yawning. By the time she was ready for bed, she... was ready for bed. Akane looked ready to drop despite having proclaimed earlier that she'd napped all afternoon.
Perhaps the hour in the instructions had been more of a warning.
Luckily, she was already underneath the covers when the next part of the spell went into effect.
And when she woke it was morning, she was her usual furry self, and Akane was beside her, wiping away tears.
Tears?
Inukai blinked and realized she'd been crying, too. The dreams she'd had...
Oh the dreams she'd had.
Akane rolled over and grabbed for her and they both started talking, fast and trying to get it all out before everything was lost...
It wasn't to say her dreams hadn't been sweet, Inukai managed, but there'd been sadness as well.
Akane blinked and scrambled for the spellbook and then out to grab for Inukai's collection of herbs and spices.
"What is it?" Inukai asked. They'd matched all the names, after all, even the ones that weren't as commonly used in Japan.
"Some of these have different kinds," Akane said. "But you wouldn't know that... I didn't even think about it."
"So that made them good, sad dreams?" Inukai questioned.
"Bitter. But... more like bittersweet," Akane replied. She nodded. "I think that's exactly what happened. And that means if we tweak a couple of things, we could control our dreams even more..."
Akane was still debating as Inukai went to look up the local name of what they actually needed. She would much rather try out the correct version of the recipe or not at all. Hopefully Kenny could talk some sense into Akane, though... it hadn't worked yet.
First, she needed to dry her face...
