January's Challenge - Icons

Welcome back to monthlysupergo! While I went into December with motivation and intentions to get the community ready for January in advance, December smacked me down with a freezing fist of wtf-rl and I only made it about halfway. So, housekeeping continues along with January's challenge!

January's challenge is Icons! Freshen up your DW or other social media with a set of icons reflecting your current interests (or just things you like).

While we're just going to make a handful of icons for ourselves or others, icon-making has been a popular challenge-type for many years. Some people maintain their own communities for the icons they've made, some fandoms have communities just for icons, and challenges like icontests, LIMS (Last Icon Maker Standing), and 20 in 20 (20 Icons in 20 Days) have been popular. Alas, with Photobucket's relative demise last year, a large percentage of fandoms icons were lost/locked.

The challenge: make at least five icons. They can be fannish or non-fannish and as un/fancy as you'd like. Other banners/theme elements also qualify, as long as you can show them off.

If you have no idea what to make icons of, feel free to leave a comment offering to make icons for others. Please only do this if you're sure you can follow through, though.

If you need somewhere to host your icons for display, all DW accounts have image hosting.

(Hope it’s okay to ask this here.) Do we only make 1 post for ourselves per challenge, or can we make a few over the month? I’d like to post something later today for a character whose birthday is today, but I might want to make more icons later. Should I make a different post after the one today, or do I just add my new icons to the first post?

Hello! I just found this community through fandomcalendar. I'd like to take part in this challenge, can I simply join the comm and go ahead in posting, or am I supposed to do something first? I didn't see any rules or FAQ in the profile, so I'm unsure.

Yup, join, do the thing, post. I'll handle tags if you need new ones made, and that's really about it. Any challenges 'requiring' signups will have separate instructions listed, but for the icons, there's nothing additional required/suggested. Also, amnesty is always permanent.

Hi, sorry for the very late response - I hurt my shoulder and wasn't able to manage a lot of typing/computer time. Thank you for the rec.

Looking back through last year's challenges, at least half were open to icons (and possibly more could be). Some are definitely x-only, though, like there was a month for mixtapes/fan-soundtracks last year, etc.
