Isn't it still July? The two months have just become one in the back of my skull...

So let's have a Fusion Fest! Take two things and mash them together and see what comes of it. But more than just fusions are welcome (Fusion Fest just sounded good, okay~) - Crossovers, AUs, etc. are welcome.

1. Fusion - a combination of two different fandoms as if they've always been one. e.g. The cast of Final Fantasy VII have always been Hogwarts students.

2. Crossover - where two different fandoms intersect but still have their attached canon. e.g. The cast of Final Fantasy VII fall into the Lifestream and are found by the Avengers on Earth.

3. Alternate Universes - combining a fandom and a different situation from canon. e.g. The cast of Final Fantasy VII working in a bakery.

4. However you want to mash these together or something different. If you primarily create original works, try some of your original characters as factory workers. Or magicians. Put beads in your knitting. Use water color and nailpolish. ^_^

Lower limit is 100 words or equivalent, please! And get fusing!

Pick-a-Number games come in many forms and have had many sorts of rules/instructions. Some work like the mad-libs we did earlier, some are for prompts, and there are a myriad of other ways to put in numbers = get out prompts!

This month, you are going to pick a number between 1-50. Please don't choose a number someone else has already chosen. I have a list of 50 prompts pulled from some of dozens of prompt lists, bingo cards, etc. I've collected over the years.

You are free to write fanfic, write original fic, draw fanart or original art, make icons, knit, vid, etc. in response. There's no upper or lower limit. If a six-word-story works, it works. And if you're inspired for your next novel, well, drop a link to it on amazon when it's published. ^_^ I don't know how I'd put a limit on your knitted entry, tbh

Timed challenges are a staple of writing challenges- while some, like NaNoWriMo -have goals like 50,000 words in 30 days, there are much smaller versions like writing 100 words in a week for a drabble community or writing as many words as possible in a short amount of time, like the many 15 Minute Ficlets and similar challenges that existed, at least, all the way back into the days of mailing lists.

There are two ways to do this and neither is wrong-

The first is to have a blank file open and start writing/arting/etc. for fifteen minutes as soon as you see the prompt. This is the traditional way, but not the only way.

The second way is to have the prompt in mind and tackle it when you have fifteen minutes available for creating. Neither way is wrong - go with what works for you.

Traditionally, minor editing is permissible before posting, but don't get carried away. If you accidentally run over a minute, that's fine too. It's all on the honor system.

This week's word will be posted shortly!

(Even though it's 'ficlets', art is fine, or any other medium you can think of - 15MinuteMeta?)

Big Bangs are traditionally, though surprisingly not originally!, challenges where an author writes many, many words of fic - generally between 10,000 and 100,000 - and is matched with an artist who creates some sort of art (banners, manips, traditional illustrations, fanmixes, etc.) to go along with the fic.

However, since many Big Bangs run over the span of months and we're a monthly challenge, we're going to have a Bitty Bang!

Write 2,000 words (your choice of subjects) and get matched with an 'artist' to get at least a small doodle, pair of icons, etc. related to your story!

(While amnesty is permanent, art will be limited to works completed by the end of the month, unless there are rogue artists roaming around after who like a challenge~)

Since Big Bangs have Author Signups, so will we-- much like with a traditional Big Bang, signing up doesn't obligate you to create anything.

Fandom/Original:
Characters or Pairing, if applicable:

It is also okay to signup with a 'blank' signup if you aren't sure yet. (More than one is good, too!)

Also called Fan Soundtracks, or FSTs, Fanmixes are fanmade mixtapes inspired by fandoms, pairings, characters, etc. While some accompany other works, such as Big Bang fics, many are made as unique fanwork. Often, creators make CD-case-sized art depicting front and back covers for their mix.

The challenge: make your own mix. Four song minimum, art optional. There's no rules on what the mix can be for- a character, a movie, BPAL perfume, dinosaurs... nor any song-length requirements.

Posting can be done however is easiest - 8tracks link, link to a Youtube playlist, etc.

Icons! Over the last few months, I've seen a lot of people coming/returning to Dreamwidth from Livejournal, Tumblr, and other sites... and then promptly mention their lack of (current) icons.

While we're just going to make a handful of icons for ourselves or others, icon-making has been a popular challenge-type for many years. Some people maintain their own communities for the icons they've made, some fandoms have communities just for icons, and challenges like icontests, LIMS (Last Icon Maker Standing), and 20 in 20 (20 Icons in 20 Days) have been popular.

The challenge: make at least five icons. They can be fannish or non-fannish and as un/fancy as you'd like.

don't worry, there's no voting - I don't want to be the first off the icon island

If you have no idea what to make icons of, feel free to leave a comment offering to make icons for others. Please only do this if you're sure you can follow through, though.

If you need somewhere to host your icons for display, all DW accounts have image hosting.

Here are the prompts for February's Character Mad-Libs! Don't look at the lists if you're planning to participate. Instead, sign-up over here, on the sign-up post. (If you somehow accidentally see the prompts and need them scrambled, let me know.)

There are two prompt lists - one list skews more towards shipfic, one towards genfic. You can write shipfic for the gen prompts or genfic for the shippy prompts.

Did you get anything surprisingly good? Hilarious? Feel free to share in the comments!

Monthly activity round-up post and January masterlist & award banners coming very soon. ^_^;

Character Mad-Libs/Random Numbers! This sort of challenge was popular (and still appears sometimes) as a meme in which one person would make a secret, numbered list of characters and other people would prompt them with scenarios like '1 and 2 adopt a kitten' or '4 and 7's most romantic dinner date!'... of course, if 1 and 2 were Darth Vader and Sauron, or 4 and 7 were Megatron and Harry Potter, things got pretty amusing. ^_^; Some dedicated communities also sprung up using the format we're going to use.

In the comments of this post, list four characters. They do not all need to be from the same fandom or even fandom characters. Your original characters are fine to use, or a mix. There will be both gen and shippy prompt lists; you can pick which set you'd like to do now (or wait and decide after seeing the lists).

Prompts will be up no later than the 4th of February. Each character will have a prompt with every other character (using four characters, that's six prompts total). If you're signing up after the 4th, that's fine. If you accidentally looked at the prompt lists, let me know and I can scramble them for you.

Example:

1. Darth Vader
2. Sauron
3. Harry Potter
4. Sherlock Holmes
(Gen)

And then wait patiently and see what silliness (or your new OTP) awaits!

January 2017's Challenge is Themed Prompt Tables!

Themed prompt tables! Many theme table challenges were fandom or even pairing specific and had their own communities. Tables generally had anywhere between five and a hundred prompts on them. Shorter ones often had themes, like the ones below, but many of the hundred-prompt ones were collections of themes and also 'writer's choice' slots. Many authors and artists took on the challenge of writing 100 stories about their favourites. (I wonder how many ever finished... I had a friend who I know kept working on hers for the better part of a decade before finally admitting defeat.) Many also had claiming and limits on how many people could be writing for certain fandoms or pairings, depending. (Some also had time limits - if someone didn't post any new works for three months, they'd lose their claim, etc.)

Table 1 - Time Periods

Hours
Days
Weeks
Months
Years

Table 2 - Senses

Sight
Sound
Touch
Taste
Smell

Table 3 - Elements

Fire
Water
Earth
Wind/Air
Spirit

Claiming Instructions:

Leave a comment with the table you want to claim and the Fandom and, optionally, Pairing, or Character you'd like to claim with. (Don't worry, there are no limits on how many people can claim a certain anything. It's just fun to keep track.) You may only have one table claim at a time, but once you finish your claim, post a new entry with links to your works and then you can claim a new table.

Original work is allowed. (Claim as 'original' or 'original, character/universe/etc.'.)

Minimums for completion - each written work should be at least 100 words, art should be at least a nice doodle, any other media can be discussed but should be equivalent.

There are no penalties for claiming but not completing a table this month.

If you have any questions, ask here or in the Prod-a-Mod Post. \o/
