It came like lightning on the breeze, a stinging pain to her face she didn't need. She shook herself free from her sleep and sat up, surprised to find it still dark outside. It was still dark inside, too. That hadn't changed, either.

-

She wasn't sure what had happened anymore. She wasn't sure if she'd just blocked it all out, or if she'd somehow been forced to forget. She'd had a lover, she knew that, their scent was still clinging to her sheets. And yet, there was no memory, none at all.

-

A face startled her as she walked down the street. It was late, maybe she'd had a few, but she was usually together. She wasn't prone to daydreaming. Booze never made her hallucinate. Except, well. Maybe for that one time at uni. But that was uni. She'd done a lot of stupid things back then.

-

Maybe it was just a shadow. But then there were shadows everyhere, hidden in the darkness. At least they didn't hurt her. They were just there, all the time. Doing what, she didn't know. But they were there, nonetheless.

-

A voice whispered to her one morning at the bus stop. She almost didn't hear it, but the words slipped freely from her mind as soon as the bus arrived, and she got lost in the rumble of the old vehicle along rugged bitumen roads.

-

Her grandmother's garden looked no different than the last time she was here. She had always grown such amazing roses, and they were all in bloom that day, a defiant streak of bright colour against the grey sky. She sat amongst them in the rain.

-

Hail, Mary, Mother of God, blessed is the fruit of your womb, and pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death. Was that even right? She hadn't done this for a very long time. The incense smoke clung to her insistently. Her rosary moved through her fingers, uncertain.

-

It was just birdsong. That's all it was. Birdsong piercing the silence of the afternoon. The peak hour traffic could not overwhelm it, and the park remained tranqil. Well, as tranquil as possible while some boys played football nearby.

-

Her best friend in the world sat opposite her, laughing, slowly draining the bottle of wine between them. She laughed too. It felt good to laugh. She hadn't done that for a while. Their hands touched, just for a moment.

-

Her new job had taken her back here, in spite of herself. She hadn't lived here for years. It was still a dump. The hazy pink walls had cracked paint, and the driveway had a new pothole. The grass had taken over.

-

Perhaps that's when things started coming back. Perhaps it didn't matter. Perhaps it was just her mind. She still didn't know what had happened. She saw flashes of things in her sleep, and wasn't sure if she had actually done them.

-

A crow sat outside her window, tapping the glass with its beak. She didn't move. Her bed was too warm. She could wait. It didn't matter. What did it matter anyway? Gods weren't real. None of this was real.

-

A black feather fell from the sky onto an empty pillow.
